A two-part post

Droopy and Callie here

Part 1:
We went to Dog Day Afternoon last Sunday. It had rained the night before so it was chilly that day but we didn't mind. We should tell you that the LASPCA hosts Dog Day Afternoon every year and all of the money made that day goes to running the LASPCA!

Before we got to Dog Day Afternoon we stopped and picked up Me-me and The Sister. Now we haven't mentioned The Sister before; she's momma's sister and she likes to come over and love on us big time but she's kinda crazy and doesn't always come to doggie events with us. She also has a nickname for Callie and it is Sappy. Get it- Droopy and Sappy. Momma doesn't find it amusing.

The Sister

We got to Dog Day Afternoon, we roamed around, visiting different booths. We got a free pass to Camp Bow Wow, which is a doggie day care and boarding facility, We walked around some more and got lots of good treats. The Sister got a hot dog with blue cheese on it and shared some blue cheese with us. Yummers!!!!! Momma bought a t-shirt with the Dog Day Afternoon logo on it. Me-me bought us "Wag Dat" doggie shirts and Momma bought raffle tickets for a basket full of yogurt milkbones.

We also bumped into a lovely gentleman named Dudley. Dudley Woo-woo to be exact. We had met him at Barkus but Momma had failed to take his picture.

Dudley woo-woo looks alot like Callie from this angle.

We decided to head out early because Me-me and The Sister were complaining about how cold they were. As we started to head back to Momma's car they started to announce the raffle winners and guess who they called first!!!! The Cheesehounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We went home with a basket full of yogurt covered milkbones!!! YUMMERS!!!!!! We've been sharing them, we promise!

Sorry about the serious lack of pictures from our adventures at Dog Day Afternoon. It was very cold and Momma said her fingers were frozen in her pockets!!!!

Part 2:
We mentioned our friend Dasher was on the news. Well Dasher has a long back story.

Dasher lived a few miles away from us and one day he was roaming around and got hit by a car!!!!!!! Someone picked him up and brought him to the Humane Society. Both of Dasher's back legs and hips were broken. When we found out about Dasher, back in December, he had been at the Humane Society for a few days and the people who ran the shelter was trying to raise money for him!!!

Please don't feel obligated to donate money for Dasher, although if you really want to that would be great! We just wanted to share his story with everyone!!!!

Bad news and good news

Momma here

Well there's good news and bad news.

First the bad news:
Callie has stage three lymphoma. It is a very aggressive fast moving cancer. Putting it lightly my husband and I are devastated. We are pursuing options for chemotherapy and despite the fact that this cancer is very treatable the life expectancy with this type of cancer is about a year. We plan on making whatever time she has left the best possible. Right now she is on prednisone, which helps the appetite and the fatigue.

Now the good news:
Thursday morning was Droopy's appointment with the eye doctor. Surprising news: Droopy does NOT have cataracts!!!!!!!! She suffers necrosclorosis (I know it's not spelled right sorry), which is a hardening of the lens in the eye and can mimic cataracts. She has to do a twice yearly trip to the eye doctor and is on a moisturizing eye drop, an anti-inflammatory eye drop, and an ointment for her eyes.

Please continue with your prayers and good vibes because they are greatly appreciated!!!! I am now so happy I started this blog because I know it will be of great support in the coming months!!!!!

If any puppies have advice to share about lymphoma or cancer we would be very thankful for it.

Crazy couple of days

Droopy here

Sorry for our serious lack of bloggie posts and commenting on everyone's bloggies. Life last week went from very quiet to a bit crazy.

Last Wednesday night momma was brushing Callie and me with our new Furminator brush, which has planned to post about anyway. While Callie was getting brushed Momma noticed a weird lumpy thing in Callie's neck. Momma said Uh oh! time to go to the vet.

You can just see one of Callie's weird neck lumpy things.

Then on Thursday off to the vet went Momma and Callie. After Dr. Bell poked and prodded Callie a whole bunch she said that the lumps Momma felt were lymph nodes and they much much bigger than they were suppose to be. Callie also had a slight fever of 103 degrees (typical doggie temperature is between 100 and 102 degrees). Dr. Bell said it was probably an infection or it could be a scary word called cancer, so she put Callie on strong antibiotics and said Callie needed to come back on Monday.

On Sunday we went to Dog Day Afternoon which we plan to post about on it own!

Back to Dr. Bell on Monday for Callie. The lymph nodes is Callie's neck had gone down but the lymph nodes in the other areas were still the same size so Dr. Bell called a special lump doctor, Momma said the doctor is really called an oncologist. They appointment is for Wednesday morning. Momma wanted us to ask for prayers (or good thoughts, if you don't pray) for Callie since things aren't looking so positive.

All the lymph nodes in a basset hound body.

The guard hound

Callie here

I am posting this to tell the bloggie world about how crazy Droopy is. Ok ok there are many, many examples but I'm only gonna talk about one. Most days she thinks she's a ferocious guard dog!!!!

Droopy likes to sit by the front door and guard the house from all the humans and doggies. Anytime anyone passes by the door she goes crazy!! Howling away, even after they are gone! Now the guard hound does not discriminate! She howls at doggies on walkies with their humans, doggies just roaming around the neighborhood, little humans on bikes, teenage humans on skateboards, and older humans on walkies.

The best part is I can trick her into becoming the ferocious guard dog!! While Droopy is laying quietly in the living room I will jump up and run to the door which causes Droopy to jump up and run to the door howling the entire way! I sneak off laughing while momma tries to quiet Droopy down. Then momma fusses at me!

The snoods

Droopy and Callie here

And now we would like to tell you about the embarrassment that momma has subjected us to. The Snood!

Snoods are for doggies with long ears, like basset hounds, bloodhounds, cocker spaniels. The snood keeps long doggie ears from getting yucky while they eat their kibbles.

Momma thinks we look cute in them while dad just laughs at us.

We don't find the snoods are too miserable but they do delay kibbles for 10 extra seconds! Which we find just unacceptable!!!! We will continue to put up with the snoods as long as momma doesn't being us outside in them.

Quiet

It's quiet, too quiet!

We have been a bit neglectful in our blogging. Things around our house have been very quiet lately and momma is still sick. It's ok cause we need a rest from all those crazy doggie parades!!!! Plus we need to rest up for all the doggie events that momma says are gonna happen in the next couple weeks, including the first dog park opening in New Orleans!!!!!! We will write more about that later, cause that's a post in it's self!

Another parade!

Callie here

Droopy and I got to go to another doggie parade last Sunday. Yes another one!!!!!!!!!!!! There have four doggie parades in and around our city in the past couple of weeks. The other two parades have been on, what momma calls, the North Shore and we didn't go to those cause Droopy doesn't like car rides that much and the North Shore is a bit of a ride.

The doggie parade on Sunday was called Arfus! It was next to Zephyr Stadium, which is where our local baseball team plays. There is also a nice park next to the stadium, called LaSalle Park. It has a nice walking paths for humans and doggies.

When we first got there it was crowded, there was loud music and lots of booths to look at. We decided to go check out the booths before the parade started. There were food booth, rescue group booths, the LASPCA, store booths, and lots of other neat booths.

While we were walking around Droopy made a beeline for the Great Dane Rescue booth. Momma said to Droopy "Boy are we in the wrong tent!!!" The lady that runs the group heard momma and said "Come see!!!!"

Look what we found!!!

A Basset Hound and a Great Dane living in harmony!!!!!

The lady who ran the Great Dane rescue said the basset hound had lived with a big shepherd doggie and the shepherd had passed away the owners didn't want the basset hound anymore!!!!!!!! How sad!! Well the great dane lady use to doggie sit the shepherd and the basset hound and she agreed to adopt the basset hound!!!!! How great is that!!!!!!!!!!! She said that the basset hound's name is Lucy, she is 14 years old and mostly deaf and blind. The Great Dane lady was happy to see us and said that Lucy perked up a lot while we were there!!!!

We decided to walk around some more and dad saw this sign.

Look who showed up for the parade! Missy and Super-Cisco!!!!!

Finally it was time for the parade!!!

That's Gumbo! He's is the mascot doggie for our football team, the Saints!!!!

We were getting antsy and a bad little boy kept giving us kibbles, without asking momma or dad, so we moved down the line of the parade and we met this cute guy!

His name is Freddie! And his momma thinks he's part basset hound and part catahoula!! He was short and long like us but had a really neat bridle spotted coat!

We decided to go check out the booths again, since most of the humans and doggies were watching the parade! While we were walking around a lady came up and told Momma about two basset hounds at the LASPCA. The lady tried to convince Momma to adopt these two doggies. Momma had to go check it out so off to the LASPCA booth we went. The LASPCA lady told Momma that the basset hounds had been adopted the week before!! We were all very happy about that! Apparently a lady had come to look at the two basset hounds and debated and debated. Finally the LASPCA had an adoption day last week and the lady showed up with two collars and leashes and said she'd take them home!!

Off to another booth we went and Momma bought us some new leashes, which we plan to use later in the year for a special human walkie!!! A lady at the store booth said she had a Droopy look-a-like named Priscilla!! Unfortunately Priscilla wasn't at the parade.

We wondered around a little more and ran into this guy!
It's ok if you don't recognize him!! He is a local artist named Jim Tweedy and he does neat doggie cartoon pictures!!!! If you look over his shoulder you can see a few, including the self portrait picture that momma keeps wanting to buy. Jim Tweedy does lots of different kinds of self portrait pictures including a basset hound one, which is the one momma wants. Momma says if you want to look at more of Jim Tweedy's pictures you can go here: http://www.friendlydoggies.com/

Finally it was time to go home!! We napped the entire way there!
